Notes |
- I am unsure of everything about Captain Dan after he left Texas. Mamaw said "one of them went off to New Mexico and was never heard from again".
There is an article in Frontier Times Magazine called "Lost Creek and Voca in McCulloch County" by Clarence Snider, Vol 23, No 11, dated August 1946. It discusses the early settlers of the area and Dan Wills is mentioned. There is a similar article in Frontier Times Magazine, Vol 11, No 10. Vol 6 No 3, December 1928, also mentions Dan. Another article, a history of Camp San Saba, mentions Dan in Vol 10, No 6, plus several other articles.
I believe the family was in New Mexico in 1880 and out of reach of the Federal Census Bureau; there were only 12 counties in 1880.
He homesteaded 160 acres in Otero. The southeast corner is in the general area of the intersection of Hwy 82 and Rio Penasco - east of Alamagordo in what is now the Lincoln National Forest and included Mayhill. It's pretty much just dry desert canyons.
