He had the mumps when Billy was a baby and almost died.

He was the best "papaw" a child could have, spending time with us and making us giggle. He walked me to the library, walked David to school and, once in a while, walked us to the ice cream parlor for a treat. I'm unsure of the dates of employment at his various jobs; I think I have them listed in the correct order.

Ima: I remember going to Grandpa's house when I was little. He had a syrup mill and they raised their own cane and he made his own syrup. Anyway I rememember going there once and he was cooking syrup. Mom made gingerbread and gingersnaps out of the syrup.
Ima: My whole family was in Texas before the [battle of the] Alamo [happened]. There was nothing here except Indians then. My grandmother told Grandpa that Quannah Parker was her uncle.
Ima: I never knew my grandmother, she left when Uncle Emmitt was only 2 years old.

Ima loved roses.

IMA JEAN SENN, born June 29, 1915 to William Albert Holder and Nettie Jean Shepherd Holder departed this life Wednesday, April 30, 2003 in Humble, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband, Wiley William Senn; brothers, Wilburn, Willie, and Emmett Holder; sister, Nona Joyce Williams. She is survived by daughters, Wanda Holzworth of Hitchcock, Patricia Abshire and husband, C.J. of Humble; sons, Doyle Eugene Senn of Humble, Larry K. Senn and wife, Joy of Porter, Wiley William "Billy" Senn of Henderson, TX; brothers, Pryor Holder and wife, Lou, Lee and Don Holder; 17 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren; numerous other family members and friends. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Rosewood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003 in the chapel of Rosewood Funeral Home with interment to immediately follow at Rosewood Memorial Park, Humble, Texas.

Wiley told this story about his mama:
"One of our neighbors was sick and Mama made a chicken pie for 'em. We walked to the neighbor's house. I don't know how far it was, 'cause I was just a little fella. It seemed like miles. When we were on our way home a big storm blowed up. Mama kept lookin' over her shoulder sayin', 'Walk faster, Wiley.' I was walkin' as fast as I could.
Mama was a strappin' big woman and that's the only time I ever seen her scared. The rain started pourin' down, the wind blew me down. I hollered and Mama turned around. Her hair pins had come undone and her hair was blowin' all over the place. Her eyes was big as plums. She looked WILD. She reached down with one hand and yanked me up into her arms then RAN all the way home and straight to the storm cellar."

All of Mamaw's family "was in Texas before the Alamo".
His death certificate, signed by Uncle Willie, says his mother's name was Sally Brendell.

(Medical):One of the stories I was told about Grandpa Will was that he died of "Rocky Mountain spotted tick fever". All my young life, I had this vision of him sitting down under a tree, getting bitten by a tick and dying there. He actually died at Shepperds Hospital in Burnet.

Notes:

Dennis' birth certificate has Shephard. There are some Sheppards on the same page on the 1920 Federal Census. There are three spellings within Dave's family, Shepheard, Shepherd and Sheppard. It is NOT the result of a fight or a feud, just that spelling wasn't a real important issue in that era.

Nettie died when I was in the second grade and I remember three things vividly. My mom cried, so I cried. I remember trying to stay with her and people trying to get me away from her to calm me down. I remember walking behind the hearse from the chapel to the gravesite. It was an incredibly long walk to a 7 year-old. I also remember lying on my back on the ground in a field by her house and watching the clouds. There was an older person with me, possibly Uncle Bill or one of Mom's cousins.
