  • Notes 
    • Mama never had her own car when she was married to Daddy. Sometimes she would get to drive his car, which was, most often, a pickup truck and ladies didn't drive trucks in those days. I remember riding around in the back of that truck with our butts planted firmly in the bed because if we fell out, Mom would kill us. Scott rode in the front with her because he was a baby and we generally picked a corner with Alan and I in the back corners and David by the cab. Unless it was raining, then we'd be huddled by the cab. When a truck is moving, rain doesn't hit the back of the cab. When the sun was shining real bright, the bed would heat up and that was another problem altogether because we rarely wore shoes and our butts weren't intended for hot surfaces.
      One time, we got in the truck and drove down to Market Stree and made a left turn and Scott went tumbling across the road. Mom slammed on the brakes and jumped out and ran and scooped him up. Meanwhile, an older couple had stopped on the other side of the 4-lane road and the woman was screaming at Mom for letting that baby ride in the back of a truck. Mom yelled, "He wasn't in the back of the truck." To which the woman replied something like, "I saw him fall out of that truck." They exchanged a few more words and then Mom got a crazy look on her face and started across the road - still holding Scott - and those people jumped in their car and took off. As it turned out, Dad had put Scott in the truck and then pushed the door to and talked to Mom for a minute but never actually slammed the door. When mom turned the corner, the door flew open and Scott rolled. She was probably about 28 at the time and was no longer the quiet little mouse she was when she was young.

      Mom used to take us to the drive-in when she had a vehicle. On a Friday night, she could get into the drive-in for a $1 - kids were free. She would put $1 worth of gas in whichever car we were borrowing. (On extra special nights, she could buy a couple of hamburgers for supper - on sale they were 20 cents each.) She would give us a dime each - popcorn was 10 cents but, if we shared, we could get a popcorn, a couple of drinks and a couple of candy bars. We were set. Scott was a baby and stayed with Mom. That was the old theater on Market St. We went to it right up until we moved to Hitchcock. I don't know how long it would take her to save up the $3 for those movies but I remember that we thought it was the most fun ever.
