My baby girl died last night. I'm trying not to think about it but it keeps slapping me in the face and stealing my breath away. Although I've been trying to prepare myself for this for 40 years, it still hurts more than I have words to tell. Melani was honey, sunshine and a tiger built into one small package and I wish the same for her daughter.

Dale was funny, talented, and intelligent. He played a harmonica and drums and was good at impersonations. He could build a surfboard or a motorcycle and rode both very well. He got his commercial driver's license at age 18 in a tiny Datsun pickup but could drive dump trucks and other equipment with ease. He had a knack for telling stories in a way that made us roll with laughter. He was a good friend and fierce protector. His first car was a small Simca (look it up) and his first motorcycle was a second-hand Sears 106. He was one of the coolest guys in school.

(Medical):Dale died when he fell from the back of a pick-up truck.

    Military:
Dale served at San Diego for bootcamp and then spent the rest of his enlistment in Okinawa.

    • Occupation: Between 1960 and 1995; Radio D-J
    • Residence: 1965-2002, Hitchcock, Galveston, Texas, USA

    Notes:

Harvey was a radio DJ and people-person. He enjoyed his celebrity functions but he also enjoyed "tinkering" with projects around the house. After growing up in an orphanage, he joined the Army and was stationed in Colorado where he met the love of his life. When his hitch was up, the young couple and their two babies moved back to Texas where they added two more sons and lived the rest of their lives in a small town between Houston and Galveston.

Harvey married Lucille Elaine ASHBY on 20 Sep 1951 in Commerce City, Adams, Colorado, USA. Lucille (daughter of Harold William ASHBY and Bernice BAIRD) was born on 21 Apr 1933 in , , Colorado, USA; died on 12 Jan 1995 in Texas City, Galveston, Texas, USA; was buried on 15 Jan 1995 in League City, Galveston, Texas, USA. Other Events:

    • Occupation: homemaker
    • Obituary: 14 Jan 1995, , Galveston, Texas, USA; Galveston Daily News

    Notes:

Elaine grew up in Colorado, the eldest of three girls. At the roller rink where she worked, she met and married a young Army private who whisked her 1000 miles away from home to a completely new life.
She raised four boys and a chihuahua named Tinkerbell in a tiny manufactured home that was always clean, currently decorated and a peaceful refuge. Once the family was settled, they began making the two-day drive to Colorado every other year. In off-years, Elaine's parents came to Texas.
She spent much of her time at her dining room table chatting with visitors or on the phone and watching her soaps. The table was the focal point for family and friends and its chairs were seldom empty.
Elaine couldn't drive a car and she swam like a rock but she was a great mom, grandmother and mother-in-law.

    Notes:

Dad had 7 children that I personally know about, 4 from one wife, 2 from two others and he adopted the son of his last wife. Dad told me that I had another brother who died in a motorcycle accident at the age of 17. This would make him born about 1953 but I don't know who he was or his mother's name. I waited too long to ask and the dementia was too bad for him to remember.

In a letter from George to Neeley
    Sunday (sometime in 1946)
I get paid Wednesday. Almost through Basic. I went to the show this afternoon and I have some film to send home.

In a letter from George to Neeley with no date
Sunday night (abt November of 1946?)
I went to Alabama and got that boy. I let him go home first though. I could have got 6 months in the guard house for that. He has a pretty niece though, she's 16. I hate KP on Sunday. I will make out an allotment soon. It rains every day. I will try to come home on Christmas.

In a letter from George to Neeley 6/23/47
Greenville, South Carolina to Mt. Enterprise
Came through Arkansas, Tennessee, & North Carolina. Saw some of the Ozarks. We made ice cream yesterday. I think I have a job driving a tractor. [This probably when he left the Corp and came back to Dallas.]

    Another letter dated 6/23/47
Tried to go into the Navy, have to wait three weeks. Tried to go to Marines. Need to borrow $10. I want to buy a house (not with the $10).

    Military:
He was only in the Corp long enough to find out that they were not going to teach him to fly like they had promised him in the recruitment office. He never forgave them for that and went through a protracted battle with them years later when they called him to finish his enlistment period. He told me that he told the man who was going to send him to prison, "I don't want to go to a foreign country and kill people I don't know. I'm not mad at them and have no wish to see them dead. If you want them dead, you go kill them and I'll stay here and do your paperwork." He didn't go to Vietnam and he didn't go to prison, so I guess it all worked out okay.

    Hobby:
He raced mostly in the Houston area but moved to stunt car driving before Gina was born. He left us a scrap book filled with newspaper articles and pictures of his driving career. Once when we were chugging along the freeway at 50 miles an hour, I asked him why he drove so slow after being a racecar driver. His answer, "I'm a good driver and I know it but these other people might not be. On a racetrack, everyone is good so it's a lot safer there than on this freeway. Always keep that in mind when you're driving. There might be a kid who just got his license in the car next to you."

    Hobby:
He took his first ride as a very young man, got his private license while Wanda was pregnant with Gina, his commercial license a few years later and was still flying ocassionally in 2009. At one time, he owned a flight school at LaPorte, Texas, where he taught much of the Pasadena police force to fly and also ran an air taxi and air freight service. Wanda's kids grew up in small airplanes like most kids rode in cars. When he ws teaching me (Gina) to fly, he always said that landing is a controlled crash. "Take it to 8 inches off the ground and crash it." With that philosophy, he survived many situations that might have gone badly.

    Occupation:
He worked at the Port of Houston and ended up in the gear room fixing broken things when he could no longer muscle his way through a day.

    Hobby:
He was in several jump clubs and jumped all over the area. He quit in about 1968. At his last meet, he took me with him and there was an emergency that day when a chute failed to open. I was 12 years old, I didn't know where we were and didn't know any of the other people there. When Dad finally got back to our spot, I asked him, "Daddy, what should I do if your parachute doesn't open?" He told me he never jumped again.

    Fact:

... equal parts race car driver, pilot, stunt car driver and musician.
Hollywood stuntman, skydiver, stunt pilot and voodoo physician.
    Smuggler, entrepeneur, patriot and rebel.
Charmed the angels and scared off the devil.
Uncle George to some, but a friend to all.
Outlaw, inlaw, their daddy and my grandpaw.
Mexico, Guatemala, Central America and Panama,
We're 1400 miles from home but they all know your name, Grandpaw.
He conquered his life in the most amazing way,
Most of you don't know it but superman died today.

I love you, Grandpaw, I'm gonna miss you, Boo.

    Notes:

Reuben was a farmer (sharecropper) most of his adult life. Dad (George) says they moved around a lot, probably after 1940. From looking at census records, I believe they lived in the same place at least until the 1940 Census. I know Pete was born in a house near Uncle Lawrence's old place so this theory makes sense. At some point after the census, they moved to the Minden area where DeSanto Winfrey lived and Perkin and George became life-long friends with their honorary cousins.

In a letter from Ruben to Robert L. and Raymond George dated 8/3/41.
Ruben lives in Mt. Enterprise Robert & Raymond are in Colorado in a CC Camp.
He stayed all day with Uncle Lawrence (Armstrong) and Grandpa (Benjamin Armstrong). Grandpa is poorly. Got a letter from Tooter (Elzie D.) yesterday, he is out of hospital after 2-3 weeks. He has been in hospital before. Ruben got him a bunch of banties. He has been "disabled" for 9 weeks and can't do anything which doesn't set well with him.

    Another letter dated 8/19/41
He got the pictures from them. Regrette? sold the Minden sawmill to the Threshs, Ruben will start nightwatching there Thursday. They moved the mill up the hill, but left the planer in its original location.
An added note dated 8/20/41 says he just heard that Grandpa died and will be buried tomorrow.

In his later years, Ruben was "blown up" when he turned on a stove and went to sleep on his couch. We are unsure if the fire went out or never came on but it eventually exploded, throwing a slighty singed Ruben, still on the couch, out into the yard.
