He later left the Galveston department for a position at the former Southern Select Brewery after turning down an offer to become chief of the San Antonio Fire Department. In 1955, Heffernan was named an operator for the city sewage disposal plant and served in that capacity until 1958. Notes:

The family lore on Michael has him jumping ship in Galveston; we have never found any record of him legally entering country, although he was eventually naturalized. He worked on the docks in Galveston as a cotton screwman, so-called because the tool they used to handle the bales was called a screw, a bit like a corkscrew. The bale was lifted to the shoulder and carried to where it needed to be. He retired from the docks in the 30s and bought a small, neighborhood grocery store.
Annie bore her first 7 children at home and elected to deliver the last at St Mary's. Michael reportedly told her that if she went to the hospital she would come out "feet first" and, unfortunately, this proved to be true. Both Annie and her baby died. Michael put the other children in an orphange for a while but they were back with him by the 1920 census, possibly because of his marriage.
Michael's second wife, Fanny disappeared from public records after the death of theiir baby daughter, Elizabeth. I don't know if she died or they divorced.
He married twice more but neither of the marriages lasted long as Henrietta died after 7 years and Michael died 6 years after marrying Matilda.

    Notes:

Annie's life was difficult and she endured many hardships for one so young. Her father died when she was only 10 years old and her mother couldn'tt care for four little girls alone so she put them in an orphanage until she remarried. I can only guess that the girls were ill-used, possibly molested, while there. Following her second marriage, Mary Grace Murray brought her girls to Galveston where Annie met and married Michael.

    Notes:

I have quite a lot of information on the James Forrey family. James Forrey was my great grandmother's (Mary Grace) first husband. Try a search of the New Orleans, Louisiana 1880 census under the name Forey. It will list James, Mary Grace, Annie, Rose and Mary. After much research, I obtained baptismal certificates from St. Michael's Church in New Orleans for all three of the girls which gives their birth dates and their baptismal dates, along with the names of their sponsors. How do you know that James Forrey was born in County Mayo, Ireland and died in 1883? I have been searching the New Orleans Death Index, but have been unable to locate James Forrey. I know that Mary Grace married a William Murray (my great grandfather) around 1884-1885 in New Orleans and they moved to Galveston, Texas. You can locate them in the 1900 Galveston Texas Census under William Murray. That is how they ended up in Galveston. I hope someone reads this because I have been doing research for about the last year and this if the first time I have come across someone that is researching the same family I am. I hope you can e-mail me at gracesmith54 at sbcglobal.net. [deceased]

    Notes:

I am searching for any information about a Thomas Grace from County Meath, who died in the late 1850's there. He was married at the time, although I do not know his wife's name. They had 2 children, Mary Grace (born about 1853) and a male infant at the time of his death. His surviving spouse, daughter and infant son left Ireland shortly after his death and went to New Orleans, Louisiana to live with the surviving spouse's cousins, the Donegans. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Grace.
