william henry mellen was the son of grenville mellen, who was in turn a son of william pepperrell mellen, who came south from dover, nh as don correctly states. grenville, born mar 6 1843, married very young (he was very tall for his age), had two children, volunteered in the confederate army, and was killed at the battle of seven pines in 1862. grenville had two sons, so william henry had a brother named grenville. i believe this brother grenville is the grenville who lived on the mississippi gulf coast. Died June 1, 1862 in Richmond, VA. from wounds received in the Battle of Seven Pines May 31, 1862. His widow Victoria Angerona Mellen filed claims in Adams Co., MS. She received $202.36. He married Victoria Angerona Taylor July 19, 1858 in Louisiana. They had two children William Henry Mellen b: 1859, d: 1925; Grenville Mellen b: 1862, d: 1883. His occupation Student studying Medicine in Harvard Mass. in 1861 when the war broke out.

Mellen and make oath that the said Victoria is the widow of the late Grenville Mellen, a Sergeant in the original, and a private in the latter organization of the Natchez Fencibles, known and designated as Company B and afterward as G in the 12th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers, who was killed at the battle of "Seven Pines" near Richmond, on the 31 May (1862) last.

The Battle of Seven Pines, also known as the Battle of Fair Oaks or Fair Oaks Station, took place on May 31 and June 1, 1862, in Henrico County, Virginia, as part of the Peninsula Campaign of the American Civil War. It was the culmination of an offensive up the Virginia Peninsula by Union Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, in which the Army of the Potomac reached the outskirts of Richmond. [Wikipedia]

She was the adopted daughter of Thomas L Jones of Natchez. I don't know if her birth name is Taylor or if she was married previously; if she was, she must have been very young. I believe her names lies somewhere between the two names in the marriage records. She was probably just plain Lucinda Taylor who dreamed of having a glamourous name such as Victorine Angorone; she was a teenager, after all, and orphaned.

One must assume that, after Grenville's untimely death, Vicky took her sons back to Louisiana where William Henry later met Lizzie. She probably remarried and chose to use her husband's name for the boys. William doesn't resurface until 1900 in Galveston County, Texas, married and with children.

Victoria is listed as the 18 year old daughter of William Pepperell Mellen. She's actually a daughter-in-law.
