Former Chief Searcher in County Clerk's Office in Manhattan.
Robert J. Leaycraft, for thirty years chief searcher in the County Clerk's office in Manhattan, but retired fcr the last twenty-nine years, died at his home, 116 St. James place, from the Infirmities of age. He had been ill since January. The funeral will be held from his late residence, tomorrow evening, the Rev. Dr. J. J. Remensnyder, of St. James Lutheran Church, Manhattan, officiating. Interment will be in Cypress Hills Cemtery.
Mr. Leaycraft was born on July 22, 1837, at 196 Stanton street, New York, the son of John McWhorter and Catherine Culver Leaycraft. He entered the city's employ when a boy of 13, starting in the County Clerk's office, and he rose to be chief searcher. Since his retirement, on his fiftieth birthday, he had spent most of his time at his country home in Monsey, Rockland County, N. Y.
During his years of activity, Mr. Leaycraft was active in Democratic politics and was a strong member of Tammany Hall. Ho was also prominently known in Masonic circles, and was a member of Keystone Lodge, No. 285, F. and A. M., Montgomery Lodge, No. 68. F. and A. M., Morton Commandery No. 4. Knights Templar, and Vetland Chapter, No. Ml, Royal Arcanum.
Besides his wife, who was Anne R White, and to whom he was married fifty-nine yours ago, Mr. Leaycraft is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Howard M. Anger; a granddaughter, Mrs. Robert F. L. Volentlne; a great-granddaughter, Margarite Volentine; a brother, Ashland Leaycraft of Rochelle Park, N. J. and a sister, Mrs. William Ward of Monsey.
