Obituary:

Donald Loyde Holder, 79 of Liberty Hill, passed away October 25, 2015 at his home in Liberty Hill. He was born May 27, 1936 in Rockdale, Texas to Nettie Shepherd and W.A. Holder. Don raised his family in Round Rock where he also owned his own business as a plumbing contractor. Outside of spending time with his family, Don enjoyed fishing hunting and playing bingo.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wilburn Holder, Willie Holder, Emmitt Holder, Dennis Lee Holder and Pryor Holder; sisters, Ima Holder Senn,and Nona Joyce Holder Williams. He was also preceded in death by his son, Aubrey Glen Holder, and wife of 26 years, Lavon Cantrell Holder.
Don is survived by his son ...; daughters.... He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 2:00PM, Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Liberty Hill Cemetery with J.W. Hicks, Jr. officiating. The Gabriels Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Holder, Wayne Gilmore, Chris Gilmore, Cody Shorten, Shiloh Shorten, and Justin Gilmore.

LaVon Holder, 66, of Liberty Hill, formerly of Round Rock, died on Thursday, March 16, 2006, in Liberty Hill.
LaVon was born on September 18, 1939, in Marble Falls, Texas, to Henry Miles and Floy Melvina Pearson Cantrell. She married Donald Loyd Holder on December 22, 1956, in Georgetown. She was a caregiver for Girling Healthcare for 10 years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Baptist faith and belonged to the Liberty Hill Outreach Center.
She is survived by her husband, Donald of Liberty Hill; son, Kenneth Holder of Cedar Park; daughters, Linda McInis of Liberty Hill and Julie Beall of Austin; grandchildren, Wayne and Chris Gilmore, Cory Scott and Jennifer and Halley Holder. She also leaves her brothers, Punk, Shorty, Dobbin and Lee Cantrell, and her sisters, Anna Lou Holder, Mell V. Waters and Mildred Hicks.
She was preceded in death by her son, Aubrey Holder; her father and mother Henry and Floy Cantrell, brothers Bill, Jay, Ruben and Floyd Cantrell, and sisters Dorothy, Clara and Bernice Cantrell.
Graveside services were Saturday, March 18, 2006 at the Liberty Hill Cemetery in Liberty Hill with Reverend J.W. Hicks Sr. officiating.

All of Mamaw's family "was in Texas before the Alamo".
His death certificate, signed by Uncle Willie, says his mother's name was Sally Brendell.

(Medical):One of the stories I was told about Grandpa Will was that he died of "Rocky Mountain spotted tick fever". All my young life, I had this vision of him sitting down under a tree, getting bitten by a tick and dying there. He actually died at Shepperds Hospital in Burnet.

Dennis' birth certificate has Shephard. There are some Sheppards on the same page on the 1920 Federal Census. There are three spellings within Dave's family, Shepheard, Shepherd and Sheppard. It is NOT the result of a fight or a feud, just that spelling wasn't a real important issue in that era.

Nettie died when I was in the second grade and I remember three things vividly. My mom cried, so I cried. I remember trying to stay with her and people trying to get me away from her to calm me down. I remember walking behind the hearse from the chapel to the gravesite. It was an incredibly long walk to a 7 year-old. I also remember lying on my back on the ground in a field by her house and watching the clouds. There was an older person with me, possibly Uncle Bill or one of Mom's cousins.

Henry married Floy Melvina PEARSON. Floy was born about 1914; died in Deceased. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

What was her name really?
Mamaw says her name was Anetta Parker. "Annetta said Quannah Parker was her uncle" [unfounded]. Emmitt's SS App says Ellen Black. Laura's birth record says Sarah Jane Black. Wm Albert's death certificate, signed by Uncle Willie, says his mother's name was Sally Brendell. Mamaw says she moved to San Antonio because she had family there. Mary Black Holder lived in San Antonio until she died about 1919.
This is a mystery that I would really like to solve; my grandmother never knew her.
Something happened between her and Pryor and she moved to San Antonio and lived to be 94-95 years old. She wanted to take Emmit with her because he was only 2. Grandpa told her to take all or none because he didn't want them separated. She left them all. Ellen was 4. William was 6. Mom said the 1900 Storm was what made her want to move away but that was much too late. There was a storm the summer before Prier was born but I found nothing that would have affected this family just after he was born.
Laura's birth record gives her mother's name as Sarah Jane Black. Prior F Holder married Sarah Jane Jobes. Emmit's death record gives his mother's name as Sally Brendell, Sarah Jobes' mother married Emil Brendel. I believe I'm on the right track here but Prior and Sarah married after William was born. Did the kids have different moms and that's why Prier's mom wanted to take only him? Is William's birth date actually a little later? Mom and Mamaw both told me that Grandpa never remarried, that they never divorced.
(This may all sound a little disjointed because I've made these notes over a period of 25 years but here is what I have found recently. [2017])
YES. When Will gave his age or date of birth, he gave 1888 or 1889, only his death record and the cemetery have 1886 and 1887. So I think I've had this backwards all along. Sally is the first (only?) wife. Her mother was Laura STEVEN and her aunt was Ella STEVEN, her grandmother was Mary. Mary only had the 2 children with her on the 1880. JOBES must have died when Sarah was very young and Laura married Emil BRENDEL, a German immigrant. I still don't know where Ellen BLACK came into it; possibly just confusion. Maybe Sarah remarried or Ella married a BLACK. And where did Anetta Parker fit in? The 1900 Census says Laura S had two children, both living.
So, Pryor married Sarah in San Antonio (1887) where Will was born (1888) then they moved south to Atascosa where Laura was born (1890). By the time Emmitt was born (1891), they had moved north to Bastrop County. So, instead of dropping her off in League City (as the family lore says), she probably left and went back to San Antonio (to Emil and her mother) during the move to Milam County (about 1893). By the 1900 Sarah was elsewhere, her mother and stepfather had no one else with them on the census.

Mamaw says her name was not Tucker but Joines. I know her mother's name was Tucker when she died and was Joines before she married Tucker. It is possible she was married to a Joines before she married the Tucker. Census records usually record step-children as such and with their father's surname. If Ruthie married a Joines first, she would have married before the 1850 census on which she is shown to be 15 years of age. Girls did not normally marry that early in that time period. [Now that I've had several years to study this family, I realize that Mamaw was getting Ruthie and Texaanna confused. She knew that Ruthie's name was Joines but didn't realize that was her maiden name.]

Texanna died a month after I was born, her great-great-grandchild. Dad carried Mamaw, Mom and me to see her just before she died. He says that's when he realized he needed a camera. He bought Mom an old Brownie and got himself an 8 mil movie camera. I wish he had bought them before we visited.
