Services for Laura Marie Davis, 87, of Davilla are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Davilla Baptist Church with Bro. David Cox and Bro. Billy Ray Crow officiating. Burial w ill follow at Davilla Cemetery.
Mrs. Davis died Saturday, July 16,011 at her residence after a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 28, 1923, in the Blackjack community near Rockdale to Joseph Raymond Cummings and Rebecca Jane (Shepherd) Cummings.
As a young girl, she moved to the Davilla area where she resided until her passing.
Mrs. Davis was a member of the first graduating class of Sharp High School in 1941.
She married Lester "Peck" Davis on July 12, 1941.
Mrs. Davis was an active member of Davilla Baptist Church and managed the Davilla Community Center.
She enjoyed growing flowers, piecing and hand quilting quilts, and playing canasta, dominoes and bingo. She loved spending time with and bragging about her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Mummey Ashworth; and a son, James Lester Davis; also, a grandchild, two great-grandchildren, two sisters and four brothers.
Survivors include two sons, four daughters, and a sister, also, 22 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Death - Buckholts - The Cummings brothers were notified last Thursday morning of the death of their father, Joe Cummings who was visiting the family of his son, Mage Cummings near Lilac. Mr. Cummings had a stroke 2-days before his death. He was about 71 years of age. He leaves six grown children, two daughters and four sons, all of who are married.

Notes:

Mamaw says her name was not Tucker but Joines. I know her mother's name was Tucker when she died and was Joines before she married Tucker. It is possible she was married to a Joines before she married the Tucker. Census records usually record step-children as such and with their father's surname. If Ruthie married a Joines first, she would have married before the 1850 census on which she is shown to be 15 years of age. Girls did not normally marry that early in that time period. [Now that I've had several years to study this family, I realize that Mamaw was getting Ruthie and Texaanna confused. She knew that Ruthie's name was Joines but didn't realize that was her maiden name.]

Texanna died a month after I was born, her great-great-grandchild. Dad carried Mamaw, Mom and me to see her just before she died. He says that's when he realized he needed a camera. He bought Mom an old Brownie and got himself an 8 mil movie camera. I wish he had bought them before we visited.

Are his parents William F and Delilah Tucker of Marion County, Alabama? William F has a son named Thomas and a daughter named Jincey Jane. See 1850 Marion County, pg 117A, image #52, last line. There is a Thomas Tucker, age 66 on this page and a George Tucker, age 106. But William and Delilah don't seem to be old enough - they're 37 and 36, the younger William is 21.

1880 was the first census to include newly formed Lee County. It's parent counties are Bastrop, Burleson, and Washington. This is the only record I have for William besides the marriage to Ruthie.

I don't know why she is listed as Rach A on the 1880 census; she's Ruth, Ruthy or Ruthie everywhere else. Until someone shows me some proof that her name is Rachel, I'll stick to Ruth.

(Research):Mamaw said her name was Louisa and the third daughter is Anita. She said the girls' name was Joines and that her great Grandma Joines married Tucker after Grandpa Joines died. Tommy Tucker was a stepbrother to the girls.
