This family is difficult to trace because of the repetitive naming and the fact that so many different families resided together. Ive seen a lot of sources that list 7 children for Russell and Lydia - William B, Emily Ann, Mary F, Sidney F, John Owen, Martha, and Melissa Lydia - and 8 children for Russell and Mary - Joseph A, Margaret, Russell, Charles, Louvinia, Stephen, Benjamin, and Archie. However, I have found no sources online that prove any of these children. I've also found sources that show most of these children to be nieces and nephews, again I find no sources that prove any parentage. If we go strictly with the 1850 and 1860 census records, assuming that all the children are with the correct parents, we find John O, Robert E, Sidney, Melissa, and Stephen who are all older than the supposed marriage date for Mary, and Joseph, Charles, Margaret and Miranda who would be Mary's children. It's possible that our Mary Rigby O'Neal is also a daughter of Bryant.

Mariah Gibson O'Neal (b. 1809) who marr Harvey O'Neal tells the story in 1890 in Rapides Parrish LA. [This is NOT true, Jim Bowie's mother was not an O'Neal.]
New York Daily Times (New York, New York), 9 January 1856
Horrible Retribution - In the early part of September last, a man living in Kemper County, in this State, whose name was Greenberry O'Neal, killed in an affray a man whose name we heard but have not forgotten. He was arrested and carried before the proper authorities and by them admitted to bail. A few nights since, while himself and family were seated around the fire, an unknown person approached his dwelling and placing a gun through a crack in the wall, discharged its contents at him, which entering his head, scattered his brains upon the floor, killing him instantly. An efforts was made, we learn, to find the perpetrators of this horrible deed and bring them to justice, but a last accounts no traces of them could be found. - Macon(?) (Miss.) Star.

Notes:
The 1850 Census shows Mary, age 23, born in Mississippi. This is his wife rather than his daughter. This family is difficult to trace because of the repetitive naming and the fact that so many different families resided together. I've seen a lot of sources that list 7 children for Russell and Lydia - William B, Emily Ann, Mary F, Sidney F, John Owen, Martha, and Melissa Lydia - and 8 children for Russell and Mary - Joseph A, Margaret, Russell, Charles, Louvinia, Stephen, Benjamin, and Archie. However, I have found no sources online that prove any of these children. On the other hand, if brother Bryant died in 1850, Stephen, Sidney, and Malissa may be his instead of Russell's. This is the problem we deal with when a family uses the same names over and over.

Russell married Lydia SULLIVAN about 1819 in , , South Carolina, USA. Lydia was born between 1801 and 1804 in , Scott, Mississippi, USA; died before 1846 in , Kemper, Mississippi, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
|
7. | Lydia SULLIVAN was born between 1801 and 1804 in , Scott, Mississippi, USA; died before 1846 in , Kemper, Mississippi, USA. Notes:
It's hard to pinpoint Lydia's age. The 1820 census lists a female between 16 and 25 [1795-1804], the 1830 has a female 20-29 [1801-1810] and the 1840 has one 40-49 [1791-1800]. I have to assume that the last one is either incorrect or is someone else. Using the first two, we see that Lydia could be born from 1801-1804. Since there is no one in the household in 1840 in this age range and the younger children are thought to be niece and nephews, it's probable that Lydia died between 1834 when Robert was born and 1837 when the next baby would have been expected.
There is a big question about whether all these children belong to Russell and to which wife they were born. Sidney is 10 on the 1850 census, making Mary only 13 when he was born. I'm pretty sure that, if he is a child of Russell, he is also a child of Lydia. Malissa is 7 on the 1850, making Mary 16 when she was born, it's possible that she is Mary's child but I believe she is Lydia's, who probably died giving birth to her or to the next child. Stephen is 3 on the 1850 census, meaning Mary was 20 when he was born. I have no proof but believe that, if he is a child of Russell, he is also a child of Mary, and she married Russell about 1846.
However, there is reason to believe that Robert, Sidney, Malissa and Stephen are the children of Bryant, Russell's brother.
Notes:
Married:
If they did marry in 1819, there are probably more children but I believe they married a little later.
