His death certificate lists his father as Abraham Sterling - his grandfather. His wife is 'Mrs C J Sterling'.

Charles and Lydia were step-siblings. The are not direct ancestors but I wanted to included Hiram in my online tree. He was quite a fellow from what I've read of him.

His headstone at City Cemetery in Mexia gives his birth year as 1867, this is incorrect.

So it would appear that Samuel Sr married two women named Eliza. I don't have a surname for the first wife (Eliza ?). Her children are Mary E, Elisha F, Charles Joseph, Nancy J and Samuel R. Then Samuel Sr married Eliza Jane Driskell Gibbons (Eliza D). Her Sterling children are William T, Grace T, George W, M Abraham, Mary Ann and Tempie B. That's a total of 11 children for Samuel Sr and he raised Eliza D's three Gibbons children. There is also the question of John, age 1, on the 1870 census. Is this John Gibbons, age 9? Is he a twin to Grace or a foster child? We don't see him again. I believe it's John Wiley Gibbons with an incorrect age.

There is a marriage in 1840, Platte County,Missouri, to Mahaly Conwell, Sam was only 15 in 1840 so I don't believe it's our Sam. If this

Note: Several of the children are not on my list, plus John's age is quite a bit off. Samuel, age 8, would be the right age for Samuel R. Sterling, Charles's age, William's age and Lydia's age would be correct. Difference in age of Liza. Relationships are not listed on this census. Liza's children from her first husband were Sarah, John and Lydia. (Note: The 1860 census and the 1870 census appears to be the same family as ours although the ages of some differ a bit as does the place of birth for the parents. It so, it appears that Samuel and Liza may have been married before the 1866 date that appears on several family trees which were used as sources. [From Ida Londo]
