    From: "Citizens, Confederates, Bushwackers & Guerillas" by Joanne Chiles Eakin, 1995..." W.S. Burford, a citizen captured in Cape Girardeau Co. Missouri 12 October 1862, imprisoned at Myrtle Prison ; released on oath and bond 8 December 1862".
    This was undoubtedly Winfield Scott Burford, b 20 July 1846, who was barely 16 years old when captured by Union troops who obviously suspected him of provided "comfort and aid to the enemy" ...since his father Kendall Hawkins Burford was a Cape Girardeau druggist, he may have been supplying medicine to ill or wounded Confederates... Kendall Hawkins was the s/o Benjamin Wyatt, who was the s/o Rev Daniel Burford, who was the s/o Capt Phillip & Mildred Burford ...I descend from Rev Daniel's bro Lt Philip Terrell Burford. Larry.

    A copy of a letter I have in my possession states the following: Philip T. Burford was born June 29, 1783 in Warren County, North Carolina. While a resident of Warren County, Philip T. Burford volunteered March 1, 1780 and served as Purchasing Commissary and Wagonmaster, under Nicholas Lon, Quartermaster General of the State of North Carolina, until sometime in October, 1781. He served from October 15, 1781 as lieutenant, three months in Colonel William Linton's North Carolina Regiment, in an expedition against the Tories. He moved about 1793 from North Carolina to Kershaw District, South Carolina, where he lived seven years, then to Franklin County, Georgia and lived three years, to Haywood County, North Carolina, lived eight or nine years, thence to Bedford County, Tennessee. Philip T. Burford was allowed pension on his application executed August 8, 1833, then a resident of Bedford County, Tennessee.

    From Kershaw Co SC Minutes of the County Court 1791-1799 by Brent Holcombe..."1 Mar 1794...Ordered that Philip Burfoot is appointed as a Deputy Sheriff for the county; he appeared and was duly qualified"...this was Philip T. Burford, whose son was Philip G.G. Burford believed to have md Tabitha Tankersley...I found a Philip Burford listed as the Chief Deputy Sheriff of Madison County Alabama in 1828...I believe this is Philip G.G (Philip T. would have been 65 in 1828 and died 1834 in Haywood Co Tn)....just across the Tenn border from Madison Co is Lincoln Co Tn, and I found a reference in Lincoln Co. Tn Court Minutes that Roland Tankersley is mentioned in a court action there on Friday 4 April 1826...this then would place Philip G.G. in near proximity to the Roland Tankersley family at least 1826-28...Philip G.G. b 4 Feb 1800 md Tabitha ca 1822 based on birth of 1st ch Ronald (Roland?) ca 1823...

    2. Jonathan Burford , the second clerk, was a good physician, who had an extensive practice in and around Moulton . He was a man of talent and popularity. He did not perform the duties of the office in person, but by a very competent deputy, whom we will notice presently. The Doctor had come from Giles county, Tenn. , to which place he returned before his term of office expired. He had a brother, Daniel Burford , who came with him from Tennessee . He was a tall, spare man, with blue eyes, and high Tennessee new-ground, a dead limb had fallen across his neck and partially broken it, but he finally recovered from the serious injury, and ever afterward carried his head at half mast, which gave him a peculiar expression of countenance. Daniel was an old man when I first knew him; lived a few miles east of Moulton , and ginned cotton for toll, extensively, for his poor neighbors. Moreover, he hired a number of white men; and had a great many lawsuits, on a small scale, with his numerous customers. In these, for a long time, he was uniformly victorious. The old man in the preparation of his cases left nothing to chance. He knew what every one of his witnesses (who were his retainers) would say before court; and if the recollection of any one of them seemed to be dim, he would refresh it by recital of concurrent facts so clear that the witness could then see the thing as plain as day. When one of his cases was called Old Daniel seemed to grow taller, his form to expand, and even his head become mere erect. He loomed up like a gallant general in the opening of a battle. At first I supposed that the desire of gain was the motive which influenced him, but long observation convinced me that though it was in part, yet that the main motive was a love of the excitement of litigation. But in process of time, the old man, very unexpectedly to himself, was defeated in one of his cases. For his life he could not divine the cause of his disaster. He had prepared the case well, and no one of his veteran witnesses had gone back on him. He concluded that it must have been owing to the young lawyer who hackled and dissected his witnesses, so he employed him on his side for his next case. But all this failed to show up what was the matter. The truth was that the public had tired of the old man and his witnesses. They had been before it too often. The Gunpowder plot had exploded. One by one his cases went off the docket in the same way until the sheriff was no longer heard to sing out of the court house window: "Dan-iel Bur-ford !" The man who is fond of going to law - who is successful for a season, and thinks full surely "his greatness is a ripening," will certainly meet the same fate. A witty fellow, after these defeats, offered to bet any man $20 that the old man could not recover on a plain note of hand. He had one child, a daughter, who married her cousin L. P. C. Burford , who moved to West Tennessee and became very rich.

    The James River is a 130-mile-long river in southern Missouri. Its source is near the town of Diggins in Webster County. It begins on a northwesterly course, then turns southwest near Northview and passes down the East side of Springfield where it is impounded to form Lake Springfield. From Springfield, it flows west and then south to Galena where it becomes an arm of Table Rock Lake, a reservoir on the White River, which is the emptying point for the river.
